Welcome to the sweet and fragrant world of Geroskipou Loukoumi – one of Cyprus’ most cherished traditional delights.
Though loukoumi traces its origins back to the East, here in the heart of Geroskipou, it has taken on a unique identity, standing out for its flavor, texture, and quality. Since 2007, Geroskipou Loukoumi has been awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by the European Union – a recognition reserved for products made authentically and traditionally.
The process begins with a few simple, yet high-quality ingredients: water, sugar, and starch. These are slowly boiled for hours in large copper cauldrons, stirred continuously until they reach the smooth, elastic consistency that defines real loukoumi.
Once ready, natural flavors and aromas are added – such as rose, lemon, orange, mint, or mastic – and the mixture is poured into large molds to cool and set. After firming up, it’s cut into small cubes and each piece is gently dusted with powdered sugar or cornflour to keep it fresh and prevent sticking.
The result? A traditional treat that melts in your mouth, with delicate aromas and a silky texture – just as it was enjoyed by generations past.
As you taste it, remember: this isn’t just a sweet – it’s a piece of living culture, a centuries-old story still being told here in Geroskipou, crafted with care and respect for tradition.
